HOW TO EAT WELL WHILE YOU'RE ABROAD

Something I always struggle with going on holiday is eating healthily. When I visit my grandparents in Greece it is easy to get my fix of fresh fish and beautiful salads, in Morocco I loved filling my boots with a hearty tagine and couscous but every now and again pizza and fries is far too tempting. Now, don't get me wrong holidays are all about cheat meals! But it's almost too easy to consume ice cream and cheetos every day and then wonder where the gut has appeared from when we get home! So I have listed my top tips for keeping healthy whilst abroad and keeping that goddess bod in perfect form.

 

BOTTLE IT

Always stick to bottled water whilst you're abroad, avoid ice in drinks and use bottled water even just to brush your teeth. The NHS advises that the best way to purify water is to boil it, or you can purchase specialist filters from pharmacies and certain stores. Risks of drinking unsanitary water or eating salad/uncooked vegetables and fruit prepared in this water can be stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. 

 

USE THE LOCAL PRODUCE

Fruit and vegetables are usually the freshest when you are in mediterranean countries such as Spain, Greece, Morocco, Italy and Croatia. You only have to walk up and down the local markets to find a huge variety of different coloured tomatoes, varieties of chillies and peppers, and melons the size of your head! If you have an apartment or villa - perfect! Grab your ingredients and create the most colourful salad possible for lunch, drown in olive oil and find some fresh bread for dipping (remember carbs are NOT the enemy!)

 

OIL UP!

Eating the food produced in warm and mediterranean countries has been proven to extend your lifespan and reduce the risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, due to the high amount of fruit, vegetables, legumes and fresh oily fish consumed, along with healthy fats such as olive oil, nuts and seeds. So when you are out for dinner swap that burger and fries for a sea bass straight from the ocean with a big local salad. You'll have more energy for dancing afterwards and your skin will be glowing!

BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

A Spanish market I visited recently offered freshly blended juices, which was a great way to get my 10 a day and because the fruit was freshly picked it tasted incredible! Load up on antioxidants that will help your immune system fight any nasty sickness bugs that could spoil your trip - blueberries, blackberries, goji berries and even pecan nuts and dark chocolate are your new best friends! Stocking up on ginger will also help settle your stomach if you are starting to feel unwell.
